Digital walking tour: in search of Münster's Jewish heritage
Between 2021 and 2023, the Association developed a digital walking-tour app for tracing Münster's Jewish heritage which partly makes use of Augmented Reality. The project was funded by the Ministry for Home Affairs, Communication, Construction and Digitalisation of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. It aims to shed light on Münster as a home to Jewish communities from the Middle Ages up to the present day, and to depict Jewish life as part of Westphalian culture. Now more than ever, the topic of Germany as a “homeland” for Jews is once again the focus of considerable attention.
At a ceremony held at Münster's Jewish Cemetery on 21 April 2021, Minister Ina Scharrenbach gave formal approval for the funding of the project. Since the web app went live on 10 September 2023, users have had access to eight tours and eleven stops as well as a city map showing all the Stolpersteine that have been laid around the city of Münster. Further stops are planned or are already being developed.
Since the spring of 2026 the app, together with its user interface and subtitles for the stops, has also been available in English.
